William Roote was born in 1879 in Horseheath on 4th June (Linton Q3-1879 3B:511), baptised on 23rd November 1879 in Horseheath, son of Edward and Sarah ROOT (née HAMMOND),

1891 census...Aged 12, he was at Woodlands Paddock, Exning with his widowed mother, brother Alfred (groom) and sisters Susan and Elizabeth.

1901 census...Aged 21 he was a servant at St George, Hanover Square, London for William and Anna STOODLEY.

On the 26th December 1901, in Wicken Church, he married Wicken born Alice Kate DAY [6-2-1879] (more often referred to as Kate)

1911 census...Aged 31, a domestic coachman, he was living in Snailwell with his wife Kate and their daughter Catherine Mabel, born 9th Oct 1902 in Newmarket, son William Edward born 2nd July 1904 in Newmarket and daughter Edith Mildred born 5th June 1908 in Snailwell.
They had a further son, Arthur Reginald, born 10th June 1914 in Snailwell. All the children were entered on the census using their middle name (just to confuse researchers !) Sometime later they moved to No 7, London Road, Newmarket (at times entered as Stetchworth)

He enlisted in Newmarket. His residence is given as Stetchworth at times, but this is the constant confusion about that part of London Road, Newmarket.

He attested on 12th December 1915 at Grove Park, giving his age as 38 years 5 months a motor driver, 5ft 6.5 inches (168.9 cm) tall, chest 37" to 40.5" (94 to 102.9 cm)
